In general, a good gaharu obtained from plants that have the Aquilaria genus, namely beccariana, malacensis, microcarpa and grynops versteegi. In the forest these plants can grow up to 40 m high with a diameter up to 60 cm and is a native plant of northern India, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Aquilaria species have adapted to live in various habitats, including those that are rocky, sandy or calcareous, well-drained slopes and ridges and land near swamps.
